We rely on energy as a fundamental resource to keep the pace of our lives in tempo. However, our reliance on costly imported oil is affecting our security in three ways:

• It hits our pocketbooks as skyrocketing oil prices sweep the nation. Motorists, including seniors, are forced to shell out more money than ever just to continue their daily activities.
• Our health and well-being are in jeopardy as current greenhouse gas emissions bring on a host of health complications, such as asthma, chronic lung disease and respiratory problems.
• We are left exposed and vulnerable to foreign nations, many in unstable regions such as the Middle East, by relying on them for oil.

New technologies, however, are making it possible to develop ethanol from a variety of inexpensive and readily available U.S. sources like switchgrass, waste and tires. Organizations are developing methods to produce this type of fuel for less than $1 per gallon – a far cry from current cost of fuel at near $100 a barrel.

Developing this type of fuel would also reduce current gas emissions by 94 percent and spur great economic growth in an American-fueled energy market. This would cut back on rising respiratory problems associated with gasoline, as well as allow the U.S. to become self-sufficient and no longer at the mercy of fledgling foreign governments.

Our community has a long-standing reputation for affecting change. It is our duty, then, to continue in that tradition and guarantee security on all fronts for our families and our nation. This includes economic security, security of our well-being and national security.
